On the morning of September 19th, 2025, Animal Control Officers Forman, Derr, and Kipe responded to an unusual and urgent call in Uniontown, Maryland. A resident had discovered three young squirrels hopelessly tangled together by their tails, wrapped tightly around a small branch and struggling to break free.
When the officers arrived, they were met with a heartbreaking sight: three tiny lives in distress, frightened and unable to move. Without hesitation, the team set to work. Using calm voices, steady hands, and proper protective gear to keep both themselves and the animals safe, they began the careful process of untangling the squirrels’ delicate tails.
It was slow, meticulous work—but compassion guided every step. One by one, the officers freed each squirrel from the knot that held them together.
Two of the squirrels, though alert, had small wounds that needed attention. The officers gently transported them to the Humane Society of Carroll County, where they received first aid. The third squirrel took an unexpected leap of freedom during the rescue and scurried off—but fortunately, it remained close by and appeared healthy and unharmed.
Later that day, once the treated squirrels were stable, the officers returned them to the very area where they were found. The three reunited youngsters quickly dashed back into the trees—just as they were meant to.
This rescue is a touching reminder of the dedication our animal control officers bring to every call, big or small. Their compassion ensured that three tiny creatures got a second chance, and our community is better for it.
