If you’re planning to trap cats for TNR (Trap–Neuter–Return), it’s important to schedule an appointment with the Humane Society of Carroll County (HSCC) first. This ensures we have space available for spay/neuter surgery and can provide guidance for a safe and successful trapping process. The surgery fee is $100 per cat, as of January 1, 2026. (Pricing subject to change.) For caregivers managing colonies with multiple cats, financial assistance may be available on a limited basis. HSCC also offers trap rentals if you don’t have your own.
When trapping, preparation and safety are key. Always use humane box traps and never attempt to trap cats by hand. Place traps on a flat, stable surface, line them with newspaper, and bait them with strong-smelling food. Monitor traps closely—cats should not stay in a trap for more than 12 hours, and it’s best to check them frequently to reduce stress. Once a cat is trapped, immediately cover the trap with a towel or sheet to help keep the cat calm.
After trapping, keep cats in their covered traps in a quiet, temperature-controlled space until transport. Follow any fasting instructions HSCC provides to ensure their safety during surgery. By using proper equipment, monitoring traps carefully, and coordinating with the Humane Society of Carroll County, you can make TNR a safe and humane solution for community cats.
