In the summer of 2025, Animal Control Officers Derr and Forman were invited to make a special appearance at Camp COPS in Westminster, Maryland—a program that brings local youth together with public-safety professionals for a week of learning, teamwork, and community building. While most of the camp focuses on law enforcement activities, this year’s visit from Animal Control added a warm, four-legged highlight that campers won’t soon forget.
The officers arrived not to teach a class or run a demonstration, but to pick up generous donations collected by the campers for the community’s animals in need. From towels and treats to toys and supplies, the students spent the week gathering items to support local shelter pets—a gesture that meant a great deal to the visiting officers.
Along with collecting the donations, Officer Derr and Officer Forman brought two shelter dogs for a friendly meet-and-greet. As soon as the dogs arrived—tails wagging and eager for attention—the campers rushed over to greet their new furry visitors. The dogs happily soaked up every moment of affection, enjoying pets, smiles, and plenty of excited hugs.
For the campers, it was a chance to see the direct impact of their kindness and to understand how their donations help animals waiting for forever homes. For the dogs, it was a wonderful break filled with socialization and love—experiences that can make a world of difference for shelter pets.
The visit was brief, but meaningful. Officers Derr and Forman left with carloads of donations and hearts full of gratitude, while the campers walked away with smiles and a lasting appreciation for the animals in their community.
Sometimes the most powerful connections come from the simplest interactions—kids, dogs, and a shared act of generosity. This year’s Camp COPS meet-and-greet was a perfect reminder of how compassion grows when a community comes together.
